GST Basics: Everything You Should Know

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a single, unified indirect tax that replaced a complex network of multiple central and state taxes in India.
The main goal was to simplify the tax system and create a “one nation, one tax” framework.

GST Types

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is an indirect tax that replaced multiple state and central taxes. It is divided into:

  • CGST: Central GST, collected by the central government on intra-state sales.

  • SGST: State GST, collected by the state government on intra-state sales.

  • IGST: Integrated GST, applied on inter-state supplies.

GST Slab Rates in India

In India, GST rates are structured into different slabs, ranging from no tax on essential goods to the highest rate on luxury and "sin" items.

  • 0%- Essential goods

  • 5%- Common goods and services

  • 12%- Standard items

  • 18%- Most goods and services

  • 28%- Luxury items & special goods

How to Use Finance Bazaar GST Calculator to Get Perfect Calculations in Under 30 Seconds

Using our GST Calculator is faster than solving a simple math problem. Just enter the amount, select your tax details, and hit calculate. Within seconds, you’ll have a clear GST breakdown with zero errors.

Enter the amount (either base or total)

Just enter the base value or the total amount. The calculator will handle the rest.
Example: If you enter ₹10,000 and choose to add GST at 18%, the tool instantly shows you GST as ₹1,800 and the total amount as ₹11,800.

Select mode – Add GST or Remove GST

You can calculate GST in two ways:

  • Add GST: Start with the base price and find the final price including GST.

  • Remove GST: Start with the total price (including GST) and find the original base price.

Example: If you received a bill of ₹1,180 (including GST), just select Remove GST at 18%. The calculator shows the base price as ₹1,000 and GST as ₹180.

Mid-Career Individuals

  • Intra-state (CGST + SGST): GST is split equally between the Central and State governments.

  • Inter-state (IGST): A single IGST applies for supply across states.

Example: For a ₹50,000 product sold within Delhi at 18% GST, CGST = ₹4,500 and SGST = ₹4,500. For inter-state supply (say Delhi to Maharashtra), IGST = ₹9,000.

Pick a GST rate (or enter a custom rate)

Our calculator includes all standard GST slabs – 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, 28%, plus a Custom option where you can enter your own rate.

Example: If you sell luxury goods with 28% GST, just select 28% and the tool gives the exact tax amount. For special cases, like a 7% local tax, you can enter it manually.
